Marble & Stone Fireplace Surrounds

What can you order in a stone fireplace surround?

A stone fireplace surround can be made as a complete frame with legs, a mantel shelf and an optional overmantel. The design can follow a room’s period details or use a simpler profile, then be adapted to the firebox and surrounding wall.

Start with a straight-on photo that shows the opening and wall. It makes the mantel proportions, available depth and stone direction easier to discuss before drawing.

Which stone or style should you start with?

Start with the stone surface you want to live with, then choose a profile that suits the room. A pale stone makes fine carving easier to read; travertine brings texture; darker or strongly veined stones give the surround more graphic weight.

White marble fireplace surrounds

White marble is represented by White Volakas and Arabescato Corchia among other white and white-veined stones. White Volakas has a calm field; Arabescato Corchia carries more active gray veining. Both can be carved, with polished or honed finishes changing the level of reflection.

Coffee, wine, acidic cleaners and some fireplace residues can mark white marble. Protect the surface and confirm a suitable sealer. See the white marble fireplace collection for the full visual range.

Travertine fireplace surrounds

Travertine provides a warmer, more tactile surface. Its visible pits can be filled for a smoother face or left open when texture is part of the design. Filled stone is easier to wipe around a fireplace; an open face needs more attention to dust and ash.

Honed travertine reads quieter than a high polish; polished travertine reflects more light and makes the linear pattern more pronounced. Browse the travertine fireplace collection before deciding on the fill and finish.

Other natural stones

Cream-beige, green, brown, gold-yellow and gray stones also appear in the fireplace references. Green marble with dark veining creates stronger contrast; cream-beige and gray work with quieter rooms. Send a photo when color or pattern is important.

Fireplace styles across the collections

The fireplace designs include French/Louis profiles with curved mantels and heavier carving, English/Regency profiles with straighter or stepped geometry, modern minimal surrounds with restrained lines, and Art Deco designs with stepped forms. Can a fireplace photo become a custom surround?

Yes. A photo can establish the proportions, mantel shape, carving and stone character you want, but the final surround still needs dimensions from the actual fireplace and wall.

See the wider fireplace project gallery for installed settings, or go directly to fireplace installation references. If you want a closer reading of the carved details, open the project images at full size and use the inquiry panel to send a reference for review.

Which stone is best around a working fireplace?

There is no single best stone without the firebox details. The surround must stay outside the clearances required by the firebox manufacturer and local authority.

Marble is a carbonate stone, so acidic cleaners and some spills can etch a polished or honed surface. A darker marble can make ash more visible; light marble can show stains and soot more clearly.

Travertine is also a carbonate stone and has natural voids. Filling makes routine cleaning easier; open pits preserve texture but trap dust. Confirm how the selected finish should be sealed and cleaned.

Heat is only one part of the decision. The installer should review the firebox instructions, wall construction, anchoring and hearth together. A carved or thick-looking surround is not automatically self-supporting.

What should you measure before a fireplace quote?

Measure the firebox opening width and height, the wall width around it, and the distance to nearby walls, trim or built-ins. Photos should show the entire wall and floor line rather than only the mantel.

Also note the firebox type, how the surround meets the hearth, and whether existing trim must be matched. These details allow for clearances and support before the legs or shelf profile is fixed.

Include any drawing or architect’s plan. Site dimensions cannot be inferred from a room image, so the installer should verify the opening and fixing conditions before production.

How should a stone surround be installed around a firebox?

The installation method must suit the wall, stone weight and firebox requirements. Depending on those conditions, the surround may need a prepared substrate, mechanical fixings or anchors, and separation from parts of the firebox.

Confirm whether the wall needs reinforcement, whether the mantel or legs require support, and where joints belong. A local code official or qualified installer should approve the approach rather than relying on a photo.

Keep the final shop drawing and firebox instructions together. They should show clearances, bearing points and the fixing sequence. If the fireplace is changing too, settle that work before stone dimensions are released.

How do you care for a natural stone fireplace surround?

Dust with a soft dry cloth and clean marks promptly with a product intended for the selected stone and finish. Avoid acidic kitchen or bathroom cleaners on marble and travertine, and do not leave ash or spills.

Use coasters and protective bases near the surround. Confirm whether the stone is sealed and what maintenance the sealer needs; sealing reduces some staining risk but does not make stone immune to acids or heat.

Inspect joints and anchors during fireplace maintenance. Loose trim, cracks or movement should be assessed by the installer before filler hides a possible support or expansion issue.

How do custom and delivery work?

Custom sizes and profiles are available, with one piece as the minimum order. Batch production and stock-supported options can also be discussed. Send the opening dimensions, wall width and photos to request a fireplace quote, and include any preferred stone or design image.

We reply within 24 hours. After the design and quotation are agreed, production takes about 20 days from receipt of the deposit and approval of the drawings. Logistics takes about 30 days, subject to the destination and shipping arrangement.

For a trade project, include the number of surrounds, destination and required sequence so production and packing can be planned together.
