Onyx vs Marble

Choose onyx for a protected statement table when translucency, banding and bookmatching justify extra care; choose marble for more routine furniture where acid care is easier to manage. Many furniture “onyx” slabs are calcite, not quartz. A 1,200 × 600 × 20 mm calcite onyx top at 2.4–2.7 t/m³ weighs about 35–39 kg (76–86 lb).

What is the practical comparison between onyx and marble?

The word onyx does not identify one mineral. It can describe banded chalcedony or a translucent calcite material often sold as onyx marble, so hardness, acid behavior and repair advice can reverse between slabs.

Property Onyx trade label Marble Source or condition
Mineral meaning May be banded chalcedony or banded calcite “onyx marble” Metamorphic carbonate rock, usually calcite Onyx definitions; marble
Hardness reference Quartz/chalcedony near 7; calcite near 3 Calcite near 3 Mohs scale
Acid behavior Quartz type is less acid-sensitive; calcite type can etch Can etch with acid Mineral type and finish matter
Surface pattern Strong parallel bands or complex layering Veins, clouds, breccia or mottling Appearance alone is not identification
Translucency Often notable in thin calcite onyx sections Generally opaque at furniture thickness Backlight the actual slab
Fissures May require resin, mesh or backing Varies by slab; fissures still need review Inspect both faces and the edge
Reference density 2.4–2.7 t/m³ (150–169 lb/ft³) for the onyx band in this brief 2.5–2.8 t/m³ (156–175 lb/ft³) General bands; slab-specific values win
1,200 × 600 × 20 mm (47.2 × 23.6 × 0.79 in) top About 34.6–38.9 kg (76.2–85.7 lb) About 36.0–40.3 kg (79.4–88.9 lb) Nominal dimensions before base or backing
Furniture role Protected statement top, bar, console or side table Broad range of coffee, dining and console tops Editorial application guidance
Care burden Depends on calcite versus quartz and the backing Prompt spill control and acid awareness Use the actual mineral and finish
Repair Translucency can make cracks, glue and filler more visible Etching and scratches may be refinished Specialist assessment before repair
Outdoor use Not suitable for exposed year-round furniture Sheltered only; acid and freezing remain risks Confirm the structure for the intended exposure
Price comparison Translucency, fissures, yield and backing affect price Grade, size, color and finish affect price Onyx and marble slab or finished-piece quotes on request through Contact
Technical review Confirm mineral, absorption, fissure treatment and backing Confirm slab grade, finish and acid-care schedule Written slab declaration

Which differences determine whether onyx or marble is the better table?

The first decision is mineral identification. A quartz-based onyx and a calcite onyx share a commercial name but not hardness or acid behavior. Only after that can translucency, fissures and furniture structure be compared responsibly.

What is sold as onyx in stone furniture?

Onyx commonly refers to chalcedony with parallel bands, a quartz-family material that is relatively hard. The stone trade also sells banded calcite under names such as onyx or onyx marble. That second material is softer, can be acid-sensitive and is the basis for much translucent slab furniture.

Do not infer a mineral from the banding alone. Ask for the declared stone name and technical sheet, then connect it to the commercial slab. A quartz onyx and a calcite onyx should not receive the same cleaner or scratch-resistance advice.

Is onyx stronger than marble?

Quartz chalcedony is harder on the Mohs scale than calcite marble, but hardness measures resistance to scratching by a reference mineral, not resistance to a falling glass or a chair back. Both true onyx and onyx marble can be brittle, and visible fissures can reduce useful strength.

Commercial calcite onyx is close to marble in its crystal hardness and often has more pronounced banding or voids. A soundness review of the exact slab, thickness, backing and span is more useful than asking which category is stronger overall.

Why does translucent onyx need a different structural review?

A translucent top may have resin, mesh or a backing layer to hold thin or fractured material together. Those layers change weight, edge appearance, heat response and how a crack propagates. An illuminated table also needs access for wiring and ventilation without trapping moisture or heat.

Approve a mock-up at the intended thickness. Mark fissures and color changes on the selected slab before cutting, then decide where the bookmatch meets the edge. A bright showroom display can make a narrow translucent panel look more even than the final table will.

Can you use an onyx top for everyday dining?

A protected dining table can use onyx when the slab is structurally suitable and the owner accepts repair visibility. Food, wine, citrus and cleaning are routine exposures; if the slab is calcite, its surface can etch. Sealed onyx still needs prompt cleaning.

For daily use, consider a honed marble table or a harder quartzite instead. Choose onyx when translucency or a specific bookmatch is the main design requirement and the room can support careful use. The round marble dining tables collection is a useful comparison for conventional marble dining forms.

Does a sealer solve onyx care?

A sealer can reduce absorption for a compatible stone and finish, but it cannot close structural fissures, prevent impact damage or make calcite acid-proof. A coating that traps moisture can create another problem if the assembly is designed for a breathable or ventilated condition.

Test the proposed sealer on a slab offcut and confirm its use for the mineral type. Keep acidic drinks and cleaners away from calcite onyx, wipe spills promptly and avoid abrasive pads. document the care products so a later cleaner does not reverse the finish.

How can you tell onyx from marble?

Start with the slab declaration, then use pattern, translucency and edge inspection as supporting clues. Do not scratch or acid-test a finished table to identify it.

Check Onyx clue Marble clue Limit of the check
Banding Tight parallel or contorted bands are common Veins and clouds may cross in several directions Marble can also look banded after cutting
Backlight Thin calcite onyx may transmit light Usually opaque at table thickness Resin and backing change transmission
Slab label Specify chalcedony or calcite onyx Specify the commercial marble variety Trade names can be inconsistent
Edge and backing Resin, mesh or laminated edge may be visible Backing depends on fissures and fabrication Ask for the section drawing

When should you choose onyx or marble?

Choose onyx when the visual effect is primary and the exact slab can be backed, lit and repaired. Choose marble when the table needs a more conventional structural and care path without relying on translucency.

Choose onyx if… Choose marble if…
Translucency or a bookmatched band is the design focus The top should read through veining and color rather than light
The user accepts careful spills, cleaning and repair limits A conventional acid-care routine is acceptable
The slab declaration covers fissures, backing and mineral type The selected marble passes the intended span and support review
The table is protected indoors or under cover The setting can control rain and direct environmental exposure

Where can you compare onyx and marble furniture directly?

The current URL map has a dedicated onyx coffee-table collection and several marble collections. Those pages show the right comparison path, but the selected slab still controls translucency and repair.

Frequently asked questions about onyx and marble

Is onyx stronger than marble?

It depends on which mineral is sold as onyx. True chalcedony onyx is quartz-based and harder than calcite marble, while many translucent slabs marketed as onyx are calcite and share marble’s acid sensitivity. Fissures and backing often control furniture strength more than the general label, so identify the slab first.

Can you use an onyx top for everyday dining?

A protected onyx dining table can work if the exact slab is sound, backed and suitable for its span, but it demands more care than a routine marble top. Confirm acid sensitivity, spills, chair impacts, cleaning and repair visibility. A busy household should compare a transparent care plan before choosing a translucent statement table.

Why is onyx translucent?

Some banded calcite materials sold as onyx transmit light through thin sections, which is why backlighting is common. The effect varies with thickness, resin, backing and vein density. A showroom light box is not proof of uniform translucency across a large table; test the actual slab at the proposed thickness.

Does onyx furniture need a backing?

Many onyx tops use resin, mesh or another backing because the stone can contain fissures and thin bands, but the need must be verified for the exact slab. A backing affects weight, allowable span, edge appearance and repair. Ask for the assembly drawing rather than assuming every onyx table has identical reinforcement.

Who wrote this onyx and marble guide?

The Amazstone Editorial Team used mineral definitions, hardness references and the October 2026 materials library. The comparison deliberately separates the commercial word onyx from a single mineral identification.

  • Onyx can refer to banded chalcedony, while translucent banded calcite is also sold in the stone trade as onyx; the mineral type must be declared.
  • Marble is a metamorphic carbonate rock normally dominated by calcite, which explains its acid sensitivity and Mohs mineral reference of 3.
  • Mohs hardness places quartz around 7 and calcite around 3; a hardness comparison does not predict impact strength or fissure propagation.
  • The October 2026 materials library includes 21 entries typed as onyx, including Bulgari White Onyx, Honey onyx, Green onyx, Blue onyx and Pink onyx; these are catalog totals, not inventory.
